The garden beans got their second wind.

So now I’m looking for new and interesting ways to cook them.

Last night’s dish was a winner: Smoky beans from the grill.

We boiled the green beans in salted water for 5 minutes, then transferred them to an ice bath. (This stops their cooking and locks in that gorgeous emerald color.) We dried them, placed them in a metal pan, then tossed them with olive oil, salt and pepper.

We put the pan on the rack of our grill, closed the lid and let the beans hang out for 5-10 minutes.

They emerged smoky, rustic and delicious — definitely a dish we want to eat again and again.

Good thing the beans got their second wind!
